Hike Upper Myer Valley
PicturePalm Oasis Located within the Upper Valley
in I will begin with some words of warning, Hiking this area is for experienced Hikers, The routes are strenuous and one can become easily disorientated. Temperatures can swing from below freezing to extreme heat. There have been many deaths in this area due to inexperienced people.
The land is beautiful and rugged. One should seek out experience hikers or hiking groups. I do not in anyway endorse this hike.If you should decide to hike this it is at your own risk.

Picture
A disused segment of Hwy 80 from about 1927, at least that's what is stamped into some of the cement sections. Hwy 80 use to follow the contours of the land, until a straighter Hwy 8was built to replace it.

In Mountain Springs there is an area where Hwy 8 Splits apart as it meanders through the mountains. The eastbound and westbound lanes go their separate ways to join up farther on. The area in between is known as The Island. within this area is an old segment of disused Hwy 80, chopped into small segments by the later Hwy 8.

Picture
Ahead lies the cutoff to this section of old Hwy 80. Below lies Myers Creek looking eastward.. The tunnel in this picture is not the one used in this trip.
Picture
Looking Westward one can see the tunnel that will be used.
Picture
This Tunnel provides a safe way to cross under Hwy 8 East. It is quite large and clear, an added bonus is it is quite cool on hot days.

Bob's Boulder

Picture
A large finger of rock sticking up from Myers creek, The story goes that a trucker driver was tossed from an out of control truck and landed next to this rock, unconscious and still strapped into his seat but still alive.
Happies Winter Home
A man by the nickname of happy built 2 houses, in the vicinity of this one. This one, a winter home, in a small drainage that joins Myers Creek next to Bobs Rock and another up toward Jacumba, a summer home, in a palm grove.

I apologize for not give out directions to most of my trips, trails change and I do not have the time to keep the site always updated. My hikes also span from the easy to the extreme, a lot of places do not even have trails, as well as extreme conditions. Some sites need to be protected as they are fragile and historically sensitive. So if you decide to hike some of these areas, do your research and know your limits, have the proper provisions .Every year many hikers die  from not understanding these Simple Rules. San Diego County and surrounding areas are diverse in climate and terrain. Remember if you do decide to Hike do your research, carry the essentials and do so at your own risk.  An alternative is to join one of the many hiking groups such as meetup or on facebook ,as well as other social sites. Not only is there safety in numbers but a pooling of knowledge.
