Happys Lower Cabin
with The Jacumba Hikers
This is not Happy Sharpe

Though I was aware of the lower site, I was unaware of The Upper site and story of the two sites. The Jacumba Hikers can be found on facebook and give hikes in their  area.
This old abandoned shack is holding up well for its age, From what I have heard it belng to a local recluse by the name of Happy. He died apparently in the 1970s . The structures probably predate this by quite a bit.

The front facing the drainage, notice how the stone work conforms to the boulder. Behind one can observe the Power Link.

Below are videos of Happies abandoned cabin and one of Myers Creek tunnels we had to use to cross HWY8.
Picture
Here's some views of the inside, certainly looks to be a in good shabe. Though the shack shows its age. There are numerous bullet hole as well note the firebox.
The bed picture is actually facing toward Myers Creek
The roof is gone and the wood is in an advance stage of dry rot, though some home made furniture is still discernible. I have also seen mention of a pot bellied stove that is no longer evident.
The whole area around the cabin has evidence of earlier inhabitants such as Morteros, one Yoni carving we found and pot shards. These are also in Myers Creek as well.
There is also quite a bit of evidence pointing to possible Illegal immigrants passing through the area. We saw clothing, sleeping bags and even larger bottles of water discarded throughout the area.

A large boulder with a Yoni carved into it, The Native Americans in this area use to modify existing rock features to create some of these. You can see where the stone has been carved away.
Picture
A good size rock outcrop with a group of morteros in it. These may extend into the sand. These can be found all around the whole area around the cabin and this section of Myers Creek..

A rock shelter in Myers Creek, notice the stone in the foreground, look closely and you can see a mortero in it

A deadly reminder toalways look where you are walking, this Western Rattle Snake blends into the surroundings. Medical attention is far away.

A lot of boulder hopping on this hike.

Farther on still bouldering.

On the hike to the palm oasis, we see on the remnants of an old trail, a reminder of earlier inhabitants of this area.
Picture
This small rock shelter has multiple morteroes within and without, next to it a Yoni Stone, in the background can be seen the Palm Oasis.

Morteros within.

a Couple of Morteros at the entry way.

Morteos within 15 feet of the rock shelter.
Picture
Walking pass the rock shelter we come to an old spring matress. Since the spring mattress has been around since 1899, it was probably removed from the ruins of Happys Upper Camp.

Another perspective of the ruin
Picture
Nearby an old tank apparatus, possibly for hot water.
Picture
in the drainage next to the ruins, what appears to be a water catchment. The Springs above the palm oasis supply water all year long.
Picture
Lush growth from the waters of the springs above.
Picture
In the drainage can be found tadpoles, proof of the waters as this is a harsh environment for amphibians without water.
Picture
Above the oasis perch on the mountain side a large rockshelter

Near the rock shelter a Yoni Stone

Another Yoni on the other side of the oasis.
I apologize for not give out directions to most of my trips, trails change and I do not have the time to keep the site always updated. My hikes also span from the easy to the extreme, a lot of places do not even have trails, as well as extreme conditions. Some sites need to be protected as they are fragile and historically sensitive. So if you decide to hike some of these areas, do your research and know your limits, have the proper provisions .Every year many hikers die  from not understanding these Simple Rules. San Diego County and surrounding areas are diverse in climate and terrain. Remember if you do decide to Hike do your research, carry the essentials and do so at your own risk.  An alternative is to join one of the many hiking groups such as meetup or on facebook ,as well as other social sites. Not only is there safety in numbers but a pooling of knowledge.
